Speed Limits
Last modified: September 5, 2006 - 2:34 PM
Speed limits are determined by the Roads & Traffic Authority (RTA) only. When determining whether a speed limit on a road is to be changed, the RTA may consult Council to determine Council's position. When a request for a change in speed limit is made to Council, this request is forwarded to the RTA by raising it as an item in the monthly Traffic Advisory Committee (TAC) meeting, which is attended by the RTA.
Urban StreetsThe general urban speed limit of 50 km/h applies in urban streets. Urban streets are generally those streets with residential properties on urban size blocks fronting the road and/or have the presence of urban street lights. Normally the urban 50 km/h speed limits are not signposted.
Rural RoadsThe normal rural speed limit is 100 km/h. On lower standard sealed rural roads the RTA may consider setting lower speed limits (for example 80 km/h). Generally speed limits and advisory speed signs are not installed on unsealed rural roads.
If you would like Council to forward a speed limit request to the RTA, submit a written request to Council's Traffic Engineer within the Engineering Services Division. All written submissions can be addressed to The General Manager, Great Lakes Council, PO Box 450, Forster, NSW, 2428.
