Private Streets/Roads
Last modified: July 20, 2009 - 4:01 PM
Council approval is required prior to naming privately owned streets/roads to ensure that there are no conflicts with existing street/road names.
To request that a private street/road name be approved, a New Road Name/s Application must be completed and forwarded to Great Lakes Council, Engineering Services Division, PO Box 450, Forster, NSW, 2428.
Your suggested street/road names will be considered by the Engineering Services Division and you will be advised of the outcome. Once an agreement has been achieved between the owner/s and Council, the owner/s may install a street/road name sign. Council will record the private street/road names on its systems where appropriate.
Street/Road Naming RequirementsCouncil's Street/Road Naming Policy and Procedure specifies a number of requirements, including, but not limited to, the following:
- All applications for the naming of streets and roads must be made in writing to the General Manager of Great Lakes Council;
- All applications must suggest three (3) new names and state reasons to support the requested name for each suggestion. If possible, the history of the name(s) proposed should be included with the application;
- All applications must be accompanied by an annotated GIS map and sufficient particulars to enable the road to be identified;
- The proposed name(s) should meet the Guidelines for the Naming of Roads published by the Geographical Names Board of NSW, as amended from time to time;
- The proposed name(s) should have a maximum length of nine letters (excluding the suffix);
- Euphony shall be considered when determining appropriateness of proposed name(s);
- Where appropriate, name continuity shall be maintained for streets and roads in the vicinity of and crossing boundaries between adjoining Council areas;

- Council will not approve any proposed road name that already exists within the same or another town within the Great Lakes Council area. If you are unsure whether the road name that you wish to propose exists, please contact Council prior to forwarding your submission.
Prior to submitting an application, you are advised to refer to Council's Street/Road Naming Policy either by contacting Council on telephone 02 6591 7295, via email council@greatlakes.nsw.gov.au or by downloading the New Road Name/s Application form below which contains a copy of the Policy.
