Existing Public Streets/Roads

Last modified: October 7, 2009 - 11:25 AM

A public street/road is one that is Council owned and maintained. Members of the public may apply to have an existing public street/road named or re-named.

To request that an existing public street/road be named or re-named, please download and complete the Existing Public Road Name Suggestion Sheet at the bottom of this page and forward it to Great Lakes Council, Engineering Services Division, PO Box 450, Forster, NSW, 2428.  Please ensure that you review Council's Street/Road Naming Policy, which is attached to the Existing Public Road Name Suggestion Sheet, prior to forwarding your submission to Council.

You are also required to attach to your suggestions sheet a plan and description indicating the location of the existing road that you would like Council to consider naming or renaming.  Your suggested street/road names will be considered by the Engineering Services Division.

Street/Road Naming Requirements

Council's Street/Road Naming Policy includes, but is not limited to, the following requirements:
  1. All applications for the naming of streets and roads must be made in writing to the General Manager of Great Lakes Council;
  2. All applications must suggest three (3) new names and state reasons to support the requested name for each suggestion. If possible, the history of the name(s) proposed should be included with the application;
  3. All applications must be accompanied by an annotated GIS map and sufficient particulars to enable the road to be identified;
  4. The proposed name(s) should meet the Guidelines for the Naming of Roads published by the Geographical Names Board of NSW, as amended from time to time;
  5. The proposed name(s) should have a maximum length of nine letters (excluding the suffix);
  6. Euphony shall be considered when determining appropriateness of proposed name(s);
  7. Where appropriate, name continuity shall be maintained for streets and roads in the vicinity of and crossing boundaries between adjoining Council areas;
  8. The proposed name(s) must comply with Council's Street/Road Naming Policy.
  9. Council will not approve any proposed road name that already exists within the same or another town within the Great Lakes Council area.  If you are unsure whether the road name that you wish to propose exists, please contact Council prior to forwarding your submission.

As indicated above, a copy of Council's Policy is attached to the Existing Public Road Name Suggestion Sheet which can be downloaded below.  Alternatively contact Council's Engineering Division on telephone number 6591 7235 or email council@greatlakes.nsw.gov.au to obtain a copy.

Advertising

The first appropriate suggested street/road name, that is not duplicated on the Great Lakes Council's Road Register, will be advertised in the local newspaper for public comment. Members of the public are generally given a period of 2 weeks to submit objections to the proposed new street/road name.

No Objections
If no objections to the proposal are raised, the approved new street/road name will be advertised again in the local newspaper, advertised in the NSW Government Gazette and added to Great Lakes Council's Road Register. Maps will then be updated to reflect the new street/road name.

Objections
Objections submitted by members of the public will be assessed by the Engineering Services Division. If the objections are found to be valid and the proposed street/road name is rejected, the next appropriate street/road name suggested by the applicant will advertised, following the same procedure as above.

Advertising Costs

The costs of advertising the proposed and approved street/road names in the local newspaper will be borne by Great Lakes Council. The costs associated with advertising new street/road names in the NSW Government Gazette will also be borne by Great Lakes Council.

Street/Road Name Signs

Costs associated with the purchase and installation of street/road name signs will be borne by Great Lakes Council.
