Rural Address Post with Reflective Numbers

Rural Address Post with Reflective Numbers

Rural Property Addressing

Last modified: September 11, 2009 - 3:02 PM

Council allocates rural property addresses at the time of Driveway Application for rural properties. Additionally, as requested or upon further development in a rural area, new rural addresses are allocated.

The rural property address is a number based on the distance of the property's access point from the start of the public road that leads to the property.

Your rural property address may need to be changed if the road your property is located on is impacted by a road upgrade or re-route. Road upgrades or re-routes may impact on the length of other roads. An example of this is the Pacific Highway upgrade, which led to the re-naming and re-numbering of sections of road that were part of the Pacific Highway prior to the re-route.

Obtaining your Rural Property Address

Existing Dwellings on Rural Properties
If you require a new rural property address or wish to find out what your rural property address is, contact Council's Engineering Services Division by phone, in writing or in person and request a number. You will need to provide your contact details, along with specific information regarding the location of your property, such as Lot, DP and street/road name.

All written submisssions can be addressed to Great Lakes Council, Engineering Services Division, PO Box 450, NSW, 2428.

New Dwellings on Rural Properties
If you are applying to construct a dwelling on a rural property, you will be required, as part of your Development Application Conditions of Consent, to submit a Driveway Application. At the time the Technical Officer assesses your driveway application, a rural address will be allocated to your property.

Who do you need to inform of your new rural property address?

When a rural address is allocated, Engineering Services will advise Council's Rates Section and arrangements will be made for Council maps to be updated. You are required to inform any other services that utilise your property address as your postal address, such as Australia Post.

Displaying your Rural Property Address

Council requires that rural property owners display their correct rural property address. Council has the authority to enforce the display of the correct address under Section 124 of the Local Government Act 1993.

Rural Address Posts
Council encourages rural property owners to display their rural property address on a rural address post with reflective numbers.

The rural address post is to be installed adjacent to the driveway / access point to the property, at a location that is easily visible from the road. This is of particular importance in assisting emergency vehicles and other services trying to locate a rural property. You can purchase a rural address post from Council's Engineering Services Division. Your post will be fabricated and couriered to the Council District Office or Depot that is the most convenient for you to collect it from. You will be contacted once it is available for collection.
