Protecting Wallis Lake with water quality gardensLast modified: October 27, 2009 - 5:07 PM
Great Lakes Council has commenced construction of water quality gardens in the Palms Estate area of Forster. Designed to filter pollutants from the stormwater, these specially designed gardens will help improve water quality in Wallis Lake. Recent studies show that Pipers Creek has the highest level of algae anywhere in Wallis Lake. "Algae is nature's way of removing excess pollution (nutrients) from the water - too much algae shows a water body is under stress" Great Lakes Council's Project Coordinator Ms Tucker said. To reduce the occurrence of unsightly algal blooms that choke our waterways water quality gardens will be constructed across the Pipers Creek Catchment which covers much of the Forster urban area. "It's great to see Council take on these important water quality improvement projects" said Mr Sciacca, Coordinator of the Local Oyster Quality Assurance Program, "not only does it mean we have excellent water quality to grow our oysters but we can all enjoy clean water for fishing and swimming". This is the first of five gardens that will be built in the Palms Estate drainage reserve. The gardens will contain plants and a sand filter which will strip the nutrients and dirt from the stormwater before it flows into Pipers Creek. "These kinds of gardens have been built in other areas and have been shown to have great benefits for water quality" said Ms Tucker, "residents in Forster are doing a great job of keeping pollutants out of our stormwater system, these gardens will help take water quality improvement to the next level". Should you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact PrudenceTucker, Great Lakes Council's Project Coordinator, on 6591 7374. This project is funded by the Stormwater Levy, Section 94 contributions and the Hunter Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority. Contact details |
