Access Awareness Day yields resultsLast modified: October 14, 2009 - 8:06 AM
Great Lakes Council has made changes to improve disabled access and facilities in and around the Administration Office in Breese Parade Forster as a result of the Access Awareness Day held in late 2008. On the Day, Council and community representatives were "wheeled" in wheelchairs, or blindfolded and then given some routine tasks and directions to complete in and around the Breese Parade administration offices and Stocklands Shopping Centre. They discovered just how difficult it can be to undertake activities that most of us take for granted. More importantly, Council's Access Committee compiled a list of outcomes from the experience that are being addressed to improve life for disabled users of Council services at Breese Parade. In August this year, pavement reconstruction was completed on the eastern side of the administration building to improve access for wheelchairs. And last week, the Access Committee's John Keep opened Council's disabled toilet facility in the Customer Service Centre. This facility is now available for use by those attending all Council meetings and public events held in the Chambers. Contact details |
