Please keep the kids safe

Last modified: September 30, 2009 - 12:59 AM

Pool owners, parents and carers are being urged to check and maintain their pool fence for compliance with regulations.

With the swimming season fast approaching, Great Lakes Council says the time is now to make sure your pool fence and pool are safe for all swimmers.

Every year over 35 Australian children under the age of five drown.  All of these drowning deaths are preventable.  A total of 50% of those deaths occur in home swimming pools where immediate action can make a difference.

Home pool fencing and effective supervision can reduce these tragic drowning deaths to zero immediately.

Swimming pool owners are advised to log onto the Royal Life Saving website http://www.homepoolsafety.com.au/ where a pool safety checklist can be downloaded to assist pool owners undertake a safety audit of their swimming pool.

Swimming pool owners can also request a compliance inspection of their pool fencing by contacting Great Lakes Council on 6591 7222.

""We urge pool owners to do the right thing and ensure their pool and fencing is compliant to avoid a tragedy" said Gary Mead, Council's Manager of Building Assessments.
