Great Lakes planning for the futureLast modified: October 12, 2009 - 8:22 AM
Just what will Great Lakes look like in another 20 years' time? That's the question Great Lakes Council is asking the community as it embarks on a major consultation and planning program to develop its Community Strategic Plan. Mayor Cr Jan McWilliams said the Community Strategic Plan, Great Lakes 2030, will provide the blueprint for Council activities over the next 20 years. "But this is a very different planning process from any that our Council has undertaken in the past," Cr McWilliams said. "As we develop the Community Strategic Plan, the community is a crucial partner in the planning process from the very beginning. Without broad community input we simply won't get an appropriate plan to take us through the next 20 years." Over the next two months a range of community workshops, surveys and information stalls will be staged right across the local government area to find out what the community considers are the priorities for the Great Lakes over the next 20 years. "Communities within the Great Lakes have a wonderful track record in contributing to Council plans and to really thinking about what's important to their community," Cr McWilliams said. "We want to take a lot of the good work that has already been undertaken over the past few years, test it against the Community Strategic Plan framework and really get people thinking strategically about the long term future of our area." The community will be asked to think about a number of themes that have emerged through previous planning and community consultation exercises as being priorities for the Great Lakes. The themes include:
"We want to know what the community sees as the priorities under each of these themes for the next 20 years so the Council can start developing the strategies and actions we need to deliver on those priorities," Cr McWilliams said. "I encourage all members of the community to participate in the consultation process - attend a community workshop, look at the information on our website, and fill in a feedback form." Details of community workshops to be held in Forster-Tuncurry, Stroud, Bulahdelah, Hawks Nest-Tea Gardens, Nabiac and Pacific Palms during October and November are being finalised and will be widely advertised in the media and published on Council's website.
