Stroud residents consulted for flood studyLast modified: September 8, 2009 - 8:57 AM
Great Lakes Council's consultants, WMAwater Pty Ltd will soon be in contact with Stroud residents to find out more about past flooding events in the Stroud region. Council's Manager of Design and Investigation, Mr Kumar Kuruppu said that the work is part of Council's on-going commitment to responsible floodplain management throughout the Shire. The Flood Study will be undertaken in accordance with the process outlined in the New South Wales Floodplain Development Manual. This study is funded by Council and the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change. The previous Stroud Flood Study completed in 1986 was only a flood assessment based on the flood levels from the February 1956 and October 1985 events and did not involve any flood modelling. The new study will establish computer models of the township that will allow determination of more accurate design flood levels and extents. The performance of the models will be verified based on historical data and community feedback. The aim of the study is to define the flood behaviour from local catchment flooding from Mills Creek and Lamans Creek over the full range of flooding up to an extreme flood event. The Flood study will also determine the number of buildings affected by over floor flooding and the flood hazard areas. A flood study for the Karuah River is currently being undertaken by Paterson Consultant on Council's behalf which will assess potential flooding from the Karuah River on the township and surrounding floodplain. In order for the flood study to be effective, it must be based on reliable data. The consultants are seeking information from the Stroud community outlining their experiences and any evidence from past flooding events. During the initial phase of the project, the consultants are collecting all available information including photographs on flood levels in the catchment. A letter will be sent out soon to all residents whose properties adjoin the creek seeking their input about the extent of past flood levels, particularly the flood in June 2007. After the consultants have prepared the flood models and determined design flood levels, Stroud residents will be given an opportunity to comment on the draft study and express their views.
