Free Kits to measure power usageLast modified: August 21, 2009 - 8:37 AM
Residents of the Great Lakes now have free access to Power Usage Meters so they can calculate how much energy each appliance in their house actually consumes. By better understanding energy consumption, residents can learn to make simple changes potentially saving several hundred dollars a year and tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Through the FOCUS on Sustainability program, Hunter Councils and Great Lakes Council are providing residents with the opportunity to measure how much their household electrical appliances cost to run, by making Energy Reduction Kits free to borrow from local libraries. The Energy Reduction Kits include a Power Usage Meter, which calculates the power consumed by each appliance and a booklet containing advice and tips on how to make simple changes in behaviour, which will save people money and help the environment. The kits are now available from the Forster and Tea Gardens Libraries. Council's Environmental Officer, April McKay said "the power usage meter is a simple handheld unit used to measure the electricity consumption and running costs of electrical appliances. The device can tell you how much money it costs you to run your appliances for every hour, quarter or year". "The unit can even calculate the power used by appliances like TV's, that use standby power. Standby power is nearly 10% of household energy consumption. Just by turning appliances off at the wall, households can save around $100 per year." Fill in the form supplied in the kit and you will go into the draw win one of three prizes each worth $100. The prize will be your choice of either $100 worth of energy saving products, or $100 off your next GreenPower energy bill. The FOCUS on Energy Reduction Kits are available free to borrow from both Forster and Tea Gardens libraries. For more information please contact Great Lakes Council on 02 6591 7222. Contact details |
