Great Lakes Council budget 'back to the drawing board'Last modified: July 13, 2009 - 11:01 AM
Great Lakes Council Mayor, Cr Jan McWilliams says the Council is bitterly disappointed that the NSW Department of Local Government (DLG) has knocked back part of its proposal for an increase in rates this year. "We were notified on Tuesday afternoon that while our environmental special rate increase has been approved, our proposal to increase business rates, to help offset the cost of promoting our local region through our Tourism office, has been refused" said Cr McWilliams. "This is extremely serious for Council, as the draft budget for the current year cut some $3.2 million from outgoings. This still left Council with the deficit of $500,000, and we now have to find another $250,000." said Cr McWilliams. Great Lakes Councillors will meet next week with management to reassess the Council's financial position and examine what areas of Council's services are to be cut further. "It is inevitable that some tough financial decisions now have to be made" said Cr McWilliams, "and residents will inevitably suffer as a result of the Minister's decision". Contact details |
