26 June 2008 CIVIC PRECINCT PREFERRED OPTION TO BE PRESENTED

Great Lakes Council’s consultants City Plan Urban Design, will present their preferred option for the Forster Civic Precinct site, which includes the Forster School of Arts site, at the Strategic Committee meeting on Tuesday 8 July 2008 to commence at 9.30am.

Great Lakes Council’s Director of Corporate and Community Services, Mr Steve Embry, said “all members of the public are welcome to attend and observe this presentation.  The next stage will involve the scheduling of a public workshop and public exhibition period to canvass public opinion of the preferred option”.

The preferred option to be presented shall be a modified version of Preliminary Option 2B, presented at the Community Workshop on 1 April 2008, which envisages the creation of a true ‘civic precinct’ encompassing the area shown in the aerial photograph.

Under Preliminary Option 2B, the precinct would include a flexible use public hall and library, along with a large L-shaped building and generous open space, forming a town square facing Breckenridge Channel.

“This option allows a combination of buildings and open spaces to be established within the Precinct.  The design is able to accommodate pedestrian access through the site, a range of civic activities and provides the most open aspect to the water” said Mr Paul Walter, City Plan consultant.

“The preferred option, which we will present to Council on 8 July, was modified to reflect the community’s desire for a flexible and accessible civic precinct, while also maintaining a strong link between the built environment and the region’s great natural beauty” said Mr Walter.

More comprehensive information on the original concept options and community meetings can be found on Council’s website www.greatlakes.nsw.gov.au.  Members of the public may attend the presentation of the preferred option at the Strategic Committee meeting on Tuesday 8 July, or comment later when the public workshop is scheduled and the preferred option is on public exhibition.
