Let's Recognise our Community AchieversGreat Lakes Council is asking members of the community to assist in nominating worthwhile local individuals, organisations and business networks in our community for the NSW/ACT Regional Achievement and Community Awards. “The Awards are a very important way we can recognise the enormous efforts of our local people in supporting our communities and making the Great Lakes a great place to live” said Great Lakes Council Mayor, Cr John Chadban. “We all know many people who give of themselves to improve our communities and our lives and we are asking locals to nominate for some well deserved recognition.” There are six categories for entrants, and all winners will be presented with a trophy and prize in the relevant category. The Business Enterprise Award is open for any group of businesses, business network or individual businesses working in partnership with other businesses. They may have achieved joint and better marketing of their combined products or services, improved the image of their local community, increased their market share, reduced costs through bulk purchasing or won larger contracts than is possible working alone. The Events and Tourism Award will recognise a community event or tourism project which may have provided a significant source of income for our community, benefited our region through direct spending visitors, income generation and employment. Additionally, the event may have had social and cultural benefits for the wider community. The Regional Service Award recognises volunteers who work hard to improve the lives of others in our communities. It may include mentoring of unemployed people, assisting with projects for underprivileged children, or volunteering time spent in friendship, support and encouragement to disadvantaged people. The Environment and Landcare Award will acknowledge individuals or organisations who show a proven passion to reducing environmental impacts in rural and regional areas. It may include those who implement landcare practices on their own properties, or within the local community. The Crown Reserve Trust Award allows all members involved with a Reserve Trust the opportunity to nominate and be recognised for their valuable and voluntary role. These people and groups maintain and preserve public assets including our showgrounds, race courses, public halls, environmental protection areas and the preservation of our scenery. There are two categories – for community and for administrators. The Community of the Year Award will recognise communities which share a strong sense of community spirit, which plays a vital role in enhancing the social, economic, commercial and environmental prosperity of their region. There are two categories – for communities with over 15,000 and under 15,000 people. -2- The prizes are significant, with the Commonwealth Bank offering AwardSaver accounts of $5,000 for winners in the Regional Service Award, Environment and Landcare Award, Crown Reserve Trust Award, and Community of the Year Award.
