Stay Safe on the Roads this Wet Season

With 25% of all car crashes occurring in the Great Lakes region happening during wet weather, Great Lakes Council is urging motorists to take special care on our roads during the current wet weather.

The Roads and Traffic Authority Accident Database reveals that in June 2007, 50% of accidents that occurred in the Great Lakes area happened in the wet weather. “In 50% of those accidents speed played a part and three of the accidents were serious enough for the Ambulance NSW to be called out” said Karen Lawless, Great Lakes Council’s Road Safety Officer. During this wet weather season, Karen Lawless is urging ALL motorists stay safe on the roads. “The wet season can be unpredictable and road conditions can change quickly. Drivers don’t often realise how important it is to adapt their driving style to fit the wet weather conditions”.  “Rain reduces visibility therefore it can become difficult to see other vehicles, road signs and the road itself. We’re asking all motorists to take simple but practical measures to ensure that they stay safe on the roads.”

  • Remember that the speed limit is the maximum allowable speed with good road conditions, so SLOW DOWN in wet weather
  • Turn on headlights to increase visibility
  • Create a safer distance between your vehicle and the vehicle in front. Keep in mind that three seconds in the minimum distance in good driving conditions
  • In the case of heavy downpours where the visibility is limited and other vehicles cannot be seen at a safe distance, pull over and wait for the rain to ease up
  • Always ensure that you and ALL passengers in the car wear seatbelts
  • Leave home earlier to allow for extra time to get to your destination
Ms Lawless also advises that it is most important to keep your vehicle well maintained and serviced. “Motorists should ensure that their headlights, tail lights, brake lights and indicators are all working. Tyre grip is most important during wet weather and therefore, tyre pressure and tread depth should be checked as well as wiper blades replaced every six months.
