Photo Competition Focus on Sustainability

World Environment Day will be celebrated in over 100 countries on Thursday 5 June. This year the focus is on the impacts of climate change through carbon emissions with the slogan ‘CO2 Kick the Habit!'.

To mark World Environment Day, Great Lakes Council is holding a photographic competition on sustainability.

"The word ‘sustainability' has different meanings for many people, and so we're interested to find out what people in the Great Lakes identify as important to them" said Naomi Soustal, Environmental Education Officer for Great Lakes Council.

"We came up with the idea of holding a Photography Competition and we're inviting the public to submit their own photographs that address the question ‘What does sustainability mean to you?'."

In the Great Lakes, as in other areas, there is a need to start moving towards a more sustainable society environmentally, socially and economically.

Entries are to be submitted on either CD or print with an entry form attached. Entries can be taken to Council offices on Breese Parade, Forster or posted to PO Box 450, Forster.   The competition closes at 4:30pm on Wednesday 4 June and is open to all ages.

Entries will be displayed in the council foyer on World Environment Day, with the winners to be announced on Monday 9 June. Photographs may be used in the Sustainability Strategy that is currently being produced by Great Lakes Council.

First prize is a copy of the book ‘Earth from the Air' by Yann Arthus Bertrand which is valued at $100. Every stunning photograph tells a story about our changing planet, with texts written by leading ecology experts.

Second prize is a worm farm valued at $65, and third prize is a compost bin and tool valued at $50.

There are simple things we can do in our home to reduce our individual carbon footprint.   Some suggestions are to turn off our lights and appliances when not using them to reduce our use of coal fired energy; use the car less by walking or riding our bikes to school and work; and recycle and reuse where possible to reduce the amount of raw materials mined from the earth.

For further information please contact Naomi Soustal on 6591 7305. Entry forms and terms and conditions will be available on Council's website (follow this link)
