Better Safety for Manning Street, Tuncurry

Great Lakes Council has successfully secured funding to upgrade Manning Street Tuncurry between Kent and Lake Streets with preliminary works due to commence on Wednesday 21 May, weather permitting.

"The completion of these works will result in increased pedestrian safety and improved traffic flows in the busiest part of Tuncurry" said Great Lakes Council's Mayor, Cr John Chadban.

Funding of $200,000 has been granted through the NSW Government's ‘RTA Repair Program', with a further $250,000 received through the Federal Government's ‘Blackspot Program'.  Approximately half of the project's funding is external, Council will contribute the same amount again to see the project completed.

The project will see the road resurfaced and new traffic lights installed at the intersection of Manning Street and South Streets.  The traffic lights are planned to become operational by late July.

"The new traffic signals at Manning and South Streets will make this busy intersection safer for all road users" said Cr Chadban, "the completion of this project will lead to improved outcomes for traffic and pedestrian flows at this notorious spot".

The construction of the new intersection at Manning and South Streets requires Council to relocate infrastructure belonging to Telstra, MidCoast Water & Country Energy, so the Project is more complicated than merely ‘ripping up the road'.

Some of the work will take place outside of normal business hours to minimise the impact on Manning Street businesses.  Customers of those businesses should be reassured that there will be minimal disruption to their access to any business in Manning Street Tuncurry during the works.

The main disruption is to parking on Manning Street, but there are alternative parking places in the streets immediately on each side of Manning Street.  On the eastern side of Manning Street, customers can use roof top parking off Parkes Street and the car park off Bakers Lane, and on the western side, the Peel Street car park and parking off Manning Lane is available.

One directional traffic will be in place for Manning Street for the duration of the works, anticipated to be from 26 May for four weeks.  During the first two weeks, southbound traffic will leave Manning Street at Wallis Street and proceed down Wharf Street to rejoin Manning Street.

During the second two weeks, northbound traffic will be diverted from Manning Street via Taree and Bent Streets, to rejoin Manning Street north of the works.

Motorists are urged to take special care along these detours, as new temporary stop signs will be in place at many intersections along Bent Street and the Wharf/Wallis Streets intersection.  The purpose of these stop signs is to slow traffic and improve safety along the detour routes.

These temporary stop signs will be removed at the completion of the work.

Bus patrons are advised that the bus stop at Beach Street will be temporarily relocated one block to the east, in Wharf Street close to the Beach Street roundabout.  Both sides of Wharf Street will be a bus zone in this spot.

"We ask that customers, businesses, motorists and pedestrians exercise care and patience while these necessary works are carried out" said Cr Chadban.
