Cultural Awards NominationsDo you know someone in the local community who you believe should be recognised for their contribution to the arts? Perhaps you are a member of an organisation you feel should be honoured for their artistic achievement or support of the arts? If so, the Great Lakes Cultural Recognition Awards provide you with an opportunity to do just that! The Great Lakes Cultural Recognition Awards are an initiative of the Great Lakes Arts Network (GLAN) which is a committee of Great Lakes Council. The Great Lakes Arts Network invites nominations from individuals and groups in order that they may be recognised in the community for their contribution to the arts in the Great Lakes local government area. The Awards recognise individuals and organisations for artistic excellence, innovation, achievement and/or support of the arts. Nominations will open on 19 May 2008 and will close on 30 June 2008. This year the Presentation of Awards Ceremonies will be held in Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens on 29 July and in Forster/Tuncurry on 31 July. The ceremonies will take place during Local Government Week. The awards ceremonies will showcase the achievements of the nominees through visual arts displays and musical performances. The Inaugural Great Lakes Cultural Recognition Awards were held in 2007 with many individuals and groups receiving recognition for their contribution to either the visual or performing arts. Another category, enlightened support, was created to recognise individuals who have made a significant contribution to any creative discipline, either by endowment or by creative practice. In light of the success of the Awards in their inaugural year, it is anticipated many more nominations will be received in 2008. "Many nominations for individuals, organisations and groups were received in 2007, though nominations for the youth categories were few" said Amanda Ellis, Community Development Coordinator at Great Lakes Council. "If you know of any young people in the local community who deserve recognition for their achievements in the arts, drop in to your local Council Office or Library to pick up some nomination forms". Nomination forms will be available from 19 May 2008 from Council offices, your local library or from the Council website. Please make sure you return your completed nomination forms to Great Lakes Council, PO Box 450, Forster 2428 no later then 3pm on 30 June 2008.
