Neighbours rights to have a say lost under the new State's Pro-Developer Laws"The rights of neighbours to have input into development proposals could soon be lost under the State Government pro-Developer Laws" says Great Lakes Mayor, Clr John Chadban. Under the new laws, private companies will be given the power to approve residential developments with no notification to neighbours. Neighbours would also lose avenues to support or object to residential developments. Clr Chadban said the State Government's radical overhaul to local planning laws takes control away from local communities. "The reality is the State Government's pro-Developer Laws take important planning decisions out of the hands of the local community, and the first you know about a development is when you see the bulldozers outside" according to Clr Chadban. The Mayor maintains that "once you've lost your sunshine and your privacy, it is too late." Clr Chadban said "At a recent Development Control Unit meeting more than 20 residents turned up to hear the debate about a development proposal and many expressed their support for the process that allowed them to be heard." In acknowledging that the whole planning process was in disarray, Clr Chadban maintained that this was also due to the Government's own legislation which mostly defines how applications are dealt with. Cl Chadban called on the Government to implement an open and inclusive enquiry so that the opinions and ideas of all in the development industry could be canvassed and heard. Contact details |
