Community Speaks....Council ListensCouncil has recently conducted a Community Census to evaluate Council's performance and better understand the priorities and expectations of the community. 1,323 completed census forms were received from the community. This strong response shows the community has appreciated the opportunity to have a say. "The results of the Census will assist Council in planning how to best serve the community." said Mayor of Great Lakes, Clr John Chadban. "Government agencies and service providers will also have a better understanding of what impacts on the quality of life in the Great Lakes." Census participants were eligible to enter a lucky draw. At the Council meeting on 22 April, each councillor drew the name of a winner. Winners each receive two $50 vouchers, redeemable for any Council service including Great Lakes Aquatic Centre membership, school holiday programs, rates and Council caravan park bookings. The winners are: Craig Ryan, Alethea Beyer, Janet Grant, Dianne Scott, Arthur Crittenden, Jim Squire, John Rogers, Nigel Harman, Ruth Smith and Graeme Hockings. "Thank you to residents who participated and community organisations that assisted with distribution and promotion through their communities" said Clr Chadban. To ensure the results of the Census are representative, additional lengths are being taken to support the participation of those who are under-represented among the census participants. "While the six districts are represented proportionate to their populations, young people and Aboriginal people are under-represented." said Chloe Beevers, Council's Strategic Community Planning Coordinator. Council staff are available to conduct workshops with groups of young people and Aboriginal people to discuss the issues raised in the census and support participation in the census. Organisations and groups can contact Council to book a workshop. The Census results will be published along side the recommendations from the 12 community workshops held in November 2007. "The ‘Community Priorities Report' will be deliberated and addressed by stakeholders at a Summit in November." Ms Beevers said. "Stakeholders to participate in the Summit include Government agencies, community organisations, service providers, elected representatives and Council."
