Wetland ManagementLast modified: July 7, 2009 - 4:32 PM
Council has commenced a series of programs to ensure that wetlands in our LGA and the Wallis Lake catchment are appropriately recognised for their environmental, social and economic values and are appropriately conserved, managed and, where required, restored. Wetland Management InitiativesThe Great Lakes LGA on the lower north coast of New South Wales, contains a series of significant coastal lake, estuarine and river floodplain systems, including Wallis Lake, Smiths Lake, Myall Lakes, the northern shore of Port Stephens, and their tributaries. The economy of our region relies on the health, quality and function of the environment and particularly the health of rivers, estuaries and lakes. As such, Great Lakes Council is acutely aware of the importance of wetlands and the ecosystem services that they provide. Great Lakes Council has commenced a series of programs and actions to ensure that wetlands are appropriately conserved, managed and, where required, restored. The wetland management program comprises a number of elements, which are summarised below. Wallis Lake Wetlands StrategyGreat Lakes Council has prepared a “Draft Wallis Lake Wetlands Strategy – vision, guiding principles and actions.” It is on exhibition for public comment between the 1 July 2009 and 12 August 2009. The Draft Wallis Lake Wetlands Strategy can be downloaded by clicking on the link below. A presentation describing the Draft Wallis Lake Wetlands Strategy has been prepared and can also be downloaded by clicking on the link below. Following the completion of the public exhibition process, it is envisaged that the vision, guiding principles and actions document would be adopted and implemented. As part of the implementation, Council intends to prepare, exhibit and adopt specific wetland management strategies for each of the 13 identified wetland management areas across the Wallis Lake catchment. The specific strategies intend to identify explicit, on-ground management measures to recognise, protect and manage our wetland systems. Once the Wallis Lake Wetlands Strategy has been finalised, this is intended to guide sound and effective wetland management across the entire Great Lakes LGA. Contact details
