Lower Wallamba River: Rivercare Plan
Last modified: June 2, 2009 - 2:34 PM
The Rivercare Plan was developed to address erosion issues within the lower Wallamba River.
Popular for its water skiing and fishing, the use and historic removal and degradation of the rivers riparian vegetation has led to major riverbank erosion issues. Such erosion has been associated with the input of significant sediment loads to Wallis Lake and a serious reduction in aquatic and riparian habitat.
The following actions have been achieved:
- Engagement of all landholders fronting the 20-kilometre length of river.
- Through the Rural Incentives Scheme 7-kilometres of fencing and riverbank projects covering 6-kilometres of riverbank have been established.
- A Memorandum of Understanding between waterskiers, caravan parks and relevant agencies to restrict skiing to an agreed management area.
- Installation of engineering structures to prevent erosion and restabilise banks and riparian zones.
- Establishment of monitoring sites to determine riverbank recession and failure and assess sediment loads entering the river.
