Smiths Lake Estuary Management Plan

Last modified: June 2, 2009 - 2:36 PM

The Smiths Lake Estuary Management Plan was developed with the intent of achieving integrated, balanced, responsible and ecologically sustainable use of the lake.

Prepared in 2001 the Plan details a range of actions required to maintain the health of Smiths Lake and surrounding environment. As the Lake is an intermittently opened coastal lake (ICOL), water quality management in the catchment is a key priority. Erosion caused by unformed table drains, modified drainage lines and creeks, poorly managed construction sites and stormwater are the main sources of sediments within Smiths Lake. Sediment input to the lake is also the main source of nutrient inputs. The plan is being reviewed during 2009, and a flood study has recently been completed. Erosion management works have also been completed in the catchment to reduce nutrient loads entering the lake system.
