Stormwater Management Strategies

The “L” Leg catchment is one of several catchments in South Forster that drain into Pipers Creek and ultimately Wallis Lake.
Pipers Creek has been identified in a number of studies as a poorly flushed waterway that is highly sensitive to any further increase in pollutant loads. That is, any further increase in nutrient loadings could exceed the recovery threshold of this sensitive waterway resulting in permanent eutrophication and seagrass loss. To ensure the situation is not be worsened by future development in the catchment, Council has adopted a water quality objective of no further increase in future pollutant loads entering Pipers Creek. Achieving this objective via a coordinated strategic framework is fundamental to any future rezoning within the South Forster release area. To ensure this objective is achieved in the “L” Leg catchment, Council recently adopted the document entitled Review of Stormwater Management Strategy for “L” Leg Catchment – South Forster (WBM, 2006). This represents the principal stormwater management strategy for this catchment and implements one of the key actions of the Wallis lake Catchment Management Plan (2003). Compliance with this Strategy is essential to protecting the long-term health of the Pipers Creek compartment of Wallis Lake.
