Urban Sustainability ProgramLast modified: August 24, 2009 - 10:36 AM
The regions iconic Wallis Lake and urban surrounds will benefit from a $1.16 million dollar injection to boost sustainability over the next three years. Urban Sustainability and Wallis Lake – A Partnership Approach
Funding will go towards: § The installation of efficient recycled water systems on public playing fields to reduce the use of precious drinking supplies. § Sourcing unwanted oyster shell as a valuable resource for reuse in projects of community benefit. § Providing free assessments to residents and business owners to reduce electricity and water costs. § The restoration of Darawakh Wetland to lessen the release of toxic acid into the Wallamba River. § Cutting the cost of likely payments under the Federal Governments Carbon Reduction Scheme by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the Tuncurry landfill. § Working with council staff to minimise the impact of everyday operations and activities on our highly valued environment. The initiative’s about changing the way we do things to cut unnecessary costs and to make better use of resources for the benefit of the whole community, current and future. It’s about improving practices to meet the expectations of our residents and lead the way in the protection of our unique surroundings. This program is an initiative of the Great Lakes Council, MidCoast Water and Greater Taree City Council partnership and is funded by the State Governments Environmental Trust.
