Sustainability Advisory Committee & ProjectsLast modified: June 3, 2009 - 12:08 AM
Capturing heat from the sun to generate electricity for use in Council buildings is one of the many sustainability projects being explored by the organisation’s Sustainability Advisory Committee (S-Team). Electricity prices are skyrocketing with Council and residents expecting to pay an additional 20% in service costs from 2009. The use of solar power can result in cost savings and reduced greenhouse gas emissions – carbon is released into the atmosphere during the coal fired electricity generation process contributing to climate change. Such projects showcase ways we (the community) can make changes for the benefit of our bank balance, local environment and fellow residents. The S-Team has been established to coordinate planning and on ground sustainability actions such as reducing energy use as outlined in Council’s Sustainability Strategy. This document guides the committee’s progress providing a broad action plan to work from. In addition to energy use and climate change the Team is focused on addressing issues surrounding themes such as transport, water quality and use, gardening, waste, climate change, purchasing, building design and development. Projects implemented by the S-Team include: § Overseeing the development of the Great Lakes Sustainability Strategy. § Undertaking energy and water audits of council buildings. § Conducting staff and councillor sustainability training. § Holding community and staff sustainability planning workshops. § Using the Sustainability Health Check tool to audit the organisations progress towards becoming sustainable. § Applying and accessing $1.16 million in external funds to deliver an Urban Sustainability Program. § The delivery of the Sustainability Advantage program aimed at improving the organisations environmental sustainability. The committee is made up of eight representatives from across the organisation and a councillor, and meets monthly. Council’s Sustainability Snapshot Publication reports on the committee’s achievements. Contact details
