Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are not only nuisance biting pests but also have the potential to spread disease-causing pathogens such as Ross River virus and Barmah Forster virus. However, mosquitoes are also an important component of the wetland ecosystem, providing food for some birds, bats, amphibians, fish and macroinvertebrates.
The management and control of mosquitoes is a major concern for local authorities but strategies should be employed that minimise adverse impact on the environment.
Council has been providing information over many years on mosquito activity and personal protection measures. In addition, a trapping program was undertaken to identify the species of mosquitoes and possible diseases transmitted within the Great Lakes area. The Premier's Department facilitated a focus group to develop a mosquito program. This has resulted in the production of a document "Living with Mosquitoes" available from NSW Health. This web site includes fact sheets on Reducing Mosquitoes in your Backyard and Facts on Mosquitoes.
