Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Neighbour Aid

Last modified: March 4, 2009 - 10:38 AM

Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Neighbour Aid is a Home and Community Care service funded by the State and Commonwealth Governments and managed by Great Lakes Council to provide social support and domestic assistance.

Services are extended to frail older people and those with a disability who require assistance with daily living (such as shopping, house cleaning and getting to social events) and those who care for them.  This includes those from a culturally and linguistically diverse background, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, those with memory loss or those who are financially disadvantaged.

In addition to Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens, the service covers Pindimar, Bundabah, North Arm Cove, Tahlee, Carrington, Nerong and Bulahdelah.

The range of services provided include shopping (with transport provided if required), home visits, weekly and fortnightly social groups for men and women, outings (eg to the cinema), a monthly Carer Support Group, minor home maintenance, light gardening, house cleaning for short periods and equipment loan (such as wheelchairs, walking frames, toilet aids).

The aim of the service is to maintain independence and enhance ability to remain living at home, decreasing isolation by increasing opportunities for social interaction, supporting carers by providing opportunities to take a break from caring and linking with others in similar circumstances, and increasing choices by improving knowledge of other support services.

Volunteers provide many of the direct services, with staff responsible for managing the service, assessing eligibiity for services and providing relevant information to enable service users to make the best choices to suit their needs.  Service delivery depends on the availability of volunteers and is provided first to those in the greatest need.  A financial contribution is requested for some services, particularly those involving transport.  Services will not be withheld if a person is unable to contribute.

Please contact the Neighbour Aid office for further information about services or for information about other services.  Neighbour Aid publish a free local Community Services Directory which is updated regularly.  Staff also meet with other Home and Community Care organisations every six months to maintain good knowledge of all services available to the community of Hawks Nest Tea Gardens and surrounding areas.

Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Neighbour Aid is located at the Great Lakes Council District Office, 245 Myall Street, Tea Gardens.  Office Hours are Monday to Thursday 10.00am-4.00pm. On Fridays the Commonwealth Carelink Centre's comprehensive information service may assist.  Phone 1800 052 222 (Freecall).
