Great Lakes Council provides a number of facilities for the boating public within the Wallis Lake Estuary, including public amenities and picnic facilities on a number of island reserves. The Wallis Lake Islands have designated areas for picnicking and other day use recreational activities.
Public Toilets & Facilities
Toilets were implemented on islands to assist with improved water quality within the estuary and improve the amenity of the area. The following islands are provided with toilet facilities:
- Long Island
- Leon Island
- Mather Island
- Miles Island
- Regatta Island
- Tern Island
- Wallis Island
Most islands are provided with barbecues and picnic tables. Whilst the island reserves are maintained regularly including mowing, rubbish removal and toilet cleaning, it is requested that visitors to the islands take away their own litter and leave the picnic areas clean and tidy for other users.
Camping on Islands
There is NO CAMPING permitted on Wallis Lake Islands due to the lack of facilities present and the sensitive ecosystem that make up the Wallis Lake Estuarine Islands. At present Great Lakes Council is investigating the possibility of upgrading certain facilities to permit camping on some islands. This is, however, a slow process, which needs adequate funding for establishment. Until further notice, the NO Camping policy stands. Persons found camping on islands can be fined.
