Engaging Government Agencies, Service Providers and Community Groups

Last modified: January 12, 2009 - 2:58 PM

Great Lakes Council is looking to find out who is doing what for the communities in the area.

While the recently conducted 'Great Lakes Community Census' identified community expectations and priorities,  Council also needs to find out more about other stakeholder organisations that share an interest in the Great Lakes.  Council is facilitating an Integrated Planning Process that will result in a Great Lakes 2020 Strategic Plan.This Integrated Planning Process encourages organisations to draw their various plans together, to understand how they interact and to get maximum leverage from their efforts by planning holistically for the future. The Strategic Plan will be delivered as a partnership between Council, state/federal agencies, service providers and community groups. Council has a custodial role in initiating, preparing and maintaining the Strategic Plan on behalf of the community.

Great Lakes Community Network Forum

The peak interagency in the Great Lakes & a Stakeholder Reference Group for Integrated Planning

The Network involves Government agencies, service providers and community organisations working together to improve quality of life in the Great Lakes. Council is facilitating an Integrated Planning Process that will result in a Great Lakes 2020 Strategic Plan. This Integrated Planning Process encourages organisations to draw their various plans together, to understand how they interact and to get maximum leverage from their efforts by planning holistically for the future. The Network is a Stakeholder Reference Group for the Integrated Planning Process. Council intends to broaden participation in this Reference Group to represent those involved in the Integrated Planning Process.

The Network:

  • Serves as a Reference Groups for the Integrated Planning process:
    • Inform development of the Great Lakes 2020 Strategic Plan;
    • Identify the appropriate organisation to deliver the strategies; and
    • Monitor delivery of the outcomes.
  • Engages organisations in local planning to identify:
    • The issues facing the community and the organisations that serve it;
    • What type of support / resources / training / advocacy organisations need;
    • How we can work together to address needs and build on strengths.
  • Facilitates partnership projects such as
    • Joint funding applications; and
    • Planning a one-stop-shop to co-locate a range of organisations.
  • Promotes funding & training opportunities, especially those facilitated by Council:
    • Area Assistance Scheme
    • Council’s Community Grants Program; and
    • CDSE Category One
  • Develops and maintains communication channels through:

Census of Stakeholder Organisations
All organisations that cover whole, or part, of the Great Lakes Local Government Area need to participate in the Census of Stakeholder Organisations for it to provide useful data to map who is doing what and identify opportunities to improve the ways we work together for the community. By participating you are investing in the future and ensuring the priorities of your organisation are identified in the Strategic Plan.

This census aims to achieve the following:
Generate a register of all plans and strategies that cover the Great Lakes Community. This includes plans that are already adopted, under review or in
  development. The work you have done in developing plans and strategies
that cover the Great Lakes is highly valued in this process.
Develop a stakeholder database and directory to ensure organisations are kept informed of opportunities to
participate;
Identify current and potential participation in committees and networks; and
Identify the needs for facilities/infrastructure to accommodate organisations.

There may be a number of people in your organisation who have different information to contribute so please advise them too. You could add this as an agenda item at your various committee and network meetings.

The Census will be launched at the Community Network Forum on 25 September 2008, at 10am in the Council Chambers. Lunch is provided. After this date, it will be available on the Council website.

Great Lakes 2020 Summit (TBA)
The ‘Community Priorities Report’ and results from the ‘Census of Stakeholder organisations’ are the basis for discussion at the Great Lakes 2020 Summit, which is under consideration for the future. At the Summit, stakeholder organisations could negotiate how we will work together to address identified priorities. Relationships and commitments negotiated between the stakeholders would be articulated in the ‘Great Lakes 2020 Strategic Plan’.
